Russian Ь and Ъ without panic

Russian has two unusual letters that you never pronounce on their own. Learn what ь and ъ actually do, hear them inside real words, and practise choosing the right sign.

Two signs · zero separate sounds Ь and Ъ change how neighbouring letters are read.

You do not pronounce ь or ъ as separate sounds. Instead, they tell you how to read the letters around them.

What Ь and Ъ do

The Russian alphabet has two signs that do not have a sound of their own: ь and ъ. Their job is not to add another sound. Their job is to change how the word is read.

The rule to remember first: never try to pronounce ь or ъ as an extra sound.

Ь usually makes the consonant softer

The Russian name of ь is мягкий знак — “soft sign”. For a beginner, the most useful idea is simple: when you see ь after a consonant, pay attention to that consonant.

One small sign can change the word

Compare these two words. The spelling is almost identical, but the soft sign changes the final consonant — and the meaning changes too.

Ь can also help separate sounds

Sometimes ь stands before a vowel and helps you hear a clearer boundary between the consonant and the following sound.

You do not need to memorise every spelling rule now. First learn to recognise the sign and remember: ь itself is not pronounced separately.

Ъ is a separator

The name твёрдый знак literally means “hard sign”, but ъ is not simply a button that makes a consonant hard. Its main beginner-friendly job is to separate the consonant from the following vowel.

You often meet it after a prefix and before е, ё, ю, я.
